Scouting first began in England in 1907 by Lord Baden-Powell, Lieutenant General of the British army. Baden-Powell was stationed in India and Africa and taught his troops how to survive in the wilderness. During the Second Boer War, he organized young men and trained them to deliver messages to the troops to support the war effort.
Since 1907, scouting has expanded worldwide to include groups such as Girl Guides, Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, and many others. The focus of scouting still remains outdoor education, although organizations such as Girl Scouts have broadened their objectives to guide young women to become moral, confident, successful women through development of a variety of skills.
